Whether ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina will be allowed to appeal against her death sentence for crimes against humanity will be decided under the existing laws and legal procedures, law, justice and parliamentary affairs minister Md Asaduzzaman said on Wednesday.

‘If she returns to the country and wants to appeal, the matter will be decided in accordance with the law,’ he said in response to a question from journalists after signing a memorandum of understanding between the Law and Justice Division and BRAC at the Secretariat.

The minister said the right to appeal is not a matter to be interpreted separately for any individual.

‘It will be determined through the existing laws and relevant legal procedures,’ he added.

On the digitalisation of the marriage and divorce registration system, Asaduzzaman said the initiative would help prevent child marriage, polygamy and various forms of fraud related to marriage.

The system would also make it easier to verify a person’s marital status, he said.

He said the digital system would also help verify information for visa applications and other purposes internationally.

Once the system is linked with various government and relevant servers, necessary information could be verified quickly, he added.

Digitalising marriage and divorce registration would reduce fraud while increasing transparency and efficiency in managing citizens’ information, the minister said.
