Dhaka witnessed incidents of crude bomb blasts in a number of spots on Friday, triggering panic among the city dwellers.

The incidents took place between noon and 11pm at places, including in front of the main gate of Jatrabari police station.

According to police, a crude bomb exploded in front of the main gate of Jatrabari police station around 7:30pm. Shortly afterwards, three more crude bombs exploded in front of a traffic police box at the nearby Jatrabari intersection.

An autorickshaw driver, identified as Ibadur Rahman, was injured in one of the blasts. He was later rescued and sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police initially suspected that the crude bombs were thrown from the flyover.

Jatrabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Raju said they were investigating who had carried out the blasts.

Earlier, crude bomb explosions were reported at five other places in the capital.

Two crude bombs exploded in front of the Sohag bus counter in Malibagh after Jumma prayers, while one exploded in front of the Betar Bhaban in Agargaon around 6:15pm, one in the Mohakhali area around 6:30pm, one under Babubazar Bridge around 8pm and another at Moghbazar intersection around 9pm.

Later at night, a crude bomb was detonated in the Science Laboratory area, leaving the area shrouded in smoke. People were seen running in panic.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations Division) Niaz Mehedi said several crude bomb explosions were reported at different places in the capital on Friday.

“We have not yet been able to confirm who carried out the explosions,” he said, adding that those involved would be identified and brought to justice using information technology and intelligence.
