The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police has arrested the administrator of a Facebook group on charges of allegedly promoting fraudulent concert ticket sales, attempting extortion and misusing information technology ahead of Pakistani singer Atif Aslam’s concert in Dhaka.
The arrested suspect was identified as Mohammad Bakhtiar Abid Khan, 21, a resident of Chowdhurypara in Malibagh under Rampura Police Station in the capital.
During the promotional campaign, the organisers allegedly discovered that a Facebook group named Bangladesh Concert & Event Connects (BCEC) was carrying advertisements and posts from various accounts offering tickets for the upcoming concert using images from a previously cancelled event.
According to the complaint, when the organisers contacted the group’s administrator, who allegedly used the Facebook profile “Ak Abid Khan”, he demanded Tk100,000 instead of removing the misleading posts.
The complaint further alleged that he threatened to continue approving similar posts if the money was not paid, with the intention of damaging the businesses and reputations of Event Sajai and Main Stage Inc.
Following the allegations, organiser Nisha Mahbuba Salam filed a case with Paltan Police Station on 15 July under relevant sections of the Cyber Security Act, 2026.
After taking over the investigation, the CID traced the suspect using intelligence and digital forensic techniques. Acting on the information, a CID team conducted a raid in the Chowdhurypara area of Malibagh at around 4:30pm on 16 July and arrested Bakhtiar Abid Khan.
An iPhone 11 was seized during the operation.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly admitted that he was the administrator of the Bangladesh Concert & Event Connects (BCEC) Facebook group and that he operated the Facebook account under the name “Ak Abid Khan”, according to the CID.
The accused has been produced before a court, while the investigation into the case is continuing.
