Students of Khulna University (KU) have handed over a hall canteen worker to the police after catching him secretly recording video with a mobile phone inside a washroom of the Bijoy ’24 female dormitory.
He was detained and turned over to the police on Wednesday, July 22.
Meanwhile, general students have boycotted all academic and administrative activities at Khulna University since Thursday morning, demanding a fair trial and overall campus security. Angry students also locked the main gate and the administrative building of the university.
According to student sources, students noticed a suspicious mobile phone in the female washroom of Bijoy ’24 Hall around 10:30PM on Wednesday and began investigating.
Later, Imam Hasan, son of canteen owner Asaduzzaman, who worked at the hall canteen for nearly two years, was detained for involvement in the incident.
Students claimed multiple secret videos were found on the suspect’s mobile phone. Allegations arose that he had been secretly recording videos through the washroom ventilator for a long time and sharing them in various Telegram groups. His wife reportedly knew about the matter as well.
As news of the incident spread, intense anger and security concerns mounted among resident students of the hall. The students detained the suspect and informed the university administration.
Meanwhile, students announced a protest rally at Hadi Chattar at 12:00PM on Thursday, accusing the university administration of negligence regarding sexual harassment offenses and demanding a fair trial.
Student representatives stated that no effective action was taken by the administration despite hours passing since the incident. They also alleged that past incidents of sexual harassment of students by teachers received no fair trial.
They announced that all administrative and academic activities on campus will remain suspended until a fair trial of the sexual harassment incident and punishment for those responsible are ensured.
In line with their demands, protesting students locked the main gate, various side gates, and the administrative building on Thursday.
An official of the university, speaking on condition of anonymity, said all administrative and academic activities remained suspended. However, due to rain until 1:00PM, male students could not hold any programs on campus.
He said administrative officers and staff stood outside the main gate from morning as they could not enter. They were able to enter the campus after 2:30PM.
The official added that a closed-door meeting was held in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor. However, the decisions made in the meeting were not immediately known and would be informed later.
Regarding the matter, Provost of Bijoy ’24 Hall Professor Dr. Selina Ahmed said, ‘We handed over the accused youth to the police at night. The university administration will take legal action in this regard.’
