A mobile court has sentenced a National Citizens Party (NCP) leader to six months’ imprisonment and fined him Tk10,000 for illegally manufacturing medicines and storing expired drugs in Faridpur.

The convict, Bayezid Hossain, 40, is a senior joint convener of the Faridpur district NCP. He is a resident of Alfadanga upazila but currently lives with his family in Goalchamot area of Faridpur city.

He was later sent to Faridpur District Jail.

The district administration conducted a raid on Bayezid-owned Messrs Janata Laboratories on Molla Bari Road in the Goalchamot area on Tuesday evening. The operation was led by Executive Magistrate Insana Tanzin. Details of the raid became known on Wednesday night.

According to the mobile court, Bayezid had been operating the factory illegally since September 2022.

During the raid, materials used to manufacture baby gel, various sexual stimulants for adults and other Ayurvedic medicines were found at the facility. Expired medicines were also reportedly being stored there.

The executive magistrate said the operation was conducted over a violation of Section 6(1) of the Essential Commodities Control Act, 1956. A large quantity of allegedly illegal medicines was seized from the factory.

Faridpur district NCP Member Secretary Saif Hasan Khan said the party would not spare anyone involved in wrongdoing.

“If anyone from our party is found to have committed wrongdoing, organisational action will certainly be taken against them. We will look into the matter and inform the central leadership,” he said.
