Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Dr. Ehsanul Haque Milon has pledged to take responsibility for the education of Ikon, the Bagerhat student who attended his HSC examination after working a night shift as a security guard at an Agricultural Bank ATM booth following his father’s burial.
The minister has instructed officials to provide Ikon with financial assistance within the next one or two days so that he does not have to work during the ongoing HSC examinations. He also assured that, after the exams, the government would extend full support for Ikon’s higher education and future academic pursuits.
The story of Ikon’s struggle, published by several media outlets on Tuesday (July 21) night, sparked widespread discussion on social media.
According to reports, Ikon’s father, Israfil Daria, suddenly fell ill on Tuesday morning and passed away later that afternoon. The 46-year-old earned a living by riding a motorcycle to support his family.
Family members said Ikon’s ancestral home is in Gopalganj. His family moved to Bagerhat when his grandfather worked as a driver for the Bangladesh Water Development Board there. Although his grandfather returned to Gopalganj after retirement, Ikon’s father chose to remain in Bagerhat.
The family currently lives in a rented house in Bagerhat town, where Ikon lives with his mother and a brother with mental health challenges. Following his father’s death, Ikon took on the responsibility of supporting the family. Despite being in the middle of his HSC examinations, he continued working night shifts, a story that has drawn nationwide attention and admiration.
