A youth was killed and 11 others were injured in a clash during an arbitration session in Osmani Nagar upazila of Sylhet on Friday night.

The deceased was Abdul Samad, 22, son of Abdul Khalique of Kamarpur village under Usmanpur union of the Osmani Nagar upazila, police said.

Local union parishad member Shakir Ahmed told New Age that there was a dispute between the families of Abdul Samad and his neighbour Rafiqul Islam over the boundary of their homes.

On Friday night after the Tarawih prayer, local elites,  including Usmanpur union BNP president Harun-Or Rashid, general secretary Abdul Matin, and the union parisha’s former member Minar Ali sat in the arbitration session in the home of Mashuk Miah of the Karampur village to settle the dispute, he said.

Shakir said that at one stage of the arbitration meeting, supporters of both sides suddenly got agitated and got locked into a clash, armed with locally made weapons, including bamboo sticks and spears, leaving 12 people, including Abdul Samad, of both sides injured.

‘Samad was immediately taken to the nearby Balaganj upazila health complex in a critical condition from the spot but the attending doctor declared him dead on arrival to the health complex,’ he said.

Osmani Nagar police station officer-in-charge Murshedul Alam Bhuiyan confirmed the death of Samad.

He said that they rushed to the spot immediately on information by locals and arrested 6 people for their suspected involvement in the clash.

‘The victim’s body was handed over to his family on Saturday afternoon after the completion of an autopsy at the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital,’ the OC said.

He said that the arrested were produced before a district judicial magistrate court in the afternoon after showing them arrested under the section 157 of the code of criminal procedure.

‘Filing a case over the murder incident is also under way,’ the OC said in the evening.
