The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has recorded 175 millimetres of rainfall in Dhaka over the past 24 hours, marking the capital’s second-highest daily rainfall in the last 17 years. The highest 24-hour rainfall was recorded in 2009, when the city received 333 millimetres.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said Sunday’s rainfall was the highest since 2009, attributing the downpour to the active southwest monsoon over Bangladesh. He noted that such heavy rainfall is typical during the monsoon season.

He said 160 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in Chattogram, 113 millimetres in Cox’s Bazar, 140 millimetres in Ambagan and 111 millimetres in Faridpur.
