Ex-AL leader, brother jailed for 10 years, fined Tk64.62cr

A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced expelled leader Enamul Haque Enu of the Awami League, whose activities are now banned, and his brother Rupan Bhuiyan to 10 years’ imprisonment each in a money laundering case filed with Wari Police Station.

Judge Md Nur-e-Alam Bhuiyan of the Dhaka Special Judge’s Court-6 delivered the verdict, said the court’s public prosecutor, Md Selim Khan.

The court also fined the convicts Tk64.62 crore, in default, they will have to serve an additional six months in jail.

Eight other accused were acquitted as the charges against them could not be proved.

On 27 February 2020, the case was filed with Wari Police Station under the Money Laundering Prevention Act, accusing Enu and Rupan of concealing Tk26.55 crore acquired through illegal means.

On 8 August 2021, a charge sheet was submitted against the two brothers and eight others, while the court framed charges against the accused on 18 September 2022.

Thirteen prosecution witnesses testified before the court during the trial.

On 30 January 2025, the same court sentenced Enu and Rupan to seven years’ imprisonment each and fined them Tk34 lakh in another case filed under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.
