Seven people, including five members of two families, were killed in landslides in Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar on early Thursday.

Five members of two families, including a couple and their five-year-old son, were killed in separate landslides in the same area of Lama upazila in Bandarban, on early Thursday.

The incidents took place at Missionpara (Paglir Jhiri) under Aziznagar union.

Aziznagar union parishad chairman Mubarak Hossen told New Age on Thursday noon that the first landslide struck at about 4:30am when a section of a hillside collapsed onto a house.

The landslide buried Md Yunus, 40, his wife Ranu Akter, 35 and their five-year-old son, Md Soleman, under the debris while they were asleep.

They died on the spot, the chairman said.

About one and a half hours later, at about 5:30am, another landslide hit the same locality, he said.

The collapse of earth and the wall of a single-storey concrete house left Md Jewel, 34, and his wife Kulsuma Akter, 25, trapped under the debris.

They also were killed on the spot, Mubarak said.

Bandarban district relief and rehabilitation officer Bulbul Akter Setu said that the district administration earlier urged residents living in landslide-prone areas to move to disaster shelters; but many were still reluctant to leave their homes.

Heavy rain also disrupted road connectivity and mobile network services in different upazilas of the district, she said.

New Age correspondent in Cox’s Bazar reported that two children were killed and a woman was injured after a rain-triggered landslide hit a house at the foot of a hill in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday midnight.

The incident occurred in the Paharchanda-Mochainyakata area under Baraitali union, damaging two houses.

Chakaria upazila nirbahi officer Shahin Delwar confirmed the incident.

The deceased were identified as Rumi, 14, daughter of late Md Kajol, and Md Tawshif, 12, son of Abdul Majid. Laila Begum, 55, Rumi’s mother, was injured in the incident.
