The body of missing Bangladeshi student Shahriar Ahmed Imon has been recovered in Cyprus, with local authorities arresting a 22-year-old suspect in connection with the crime.
Investigators allege that the suspect demanded ransom from Imon’s family after the killing.
Imon, the son of Nasir Mia from Bakhernagar in Raipura Upazila of Narsingdi, had been missing since 12 June after leaving the Oroklini area.
According to local media reports, he had informed acquaintances that he was heading to his first day of work at a factory in the Kofinou region.
On the night he disappeared, Imon reportedly shared his location with a friend via a mobile application. All communication with him ceased shortly afterward.
Police said the arrested suspect confessed during questioning and provided information about the weapon used in the killing, as well as the locations where the victim’s personal belongings had been discarded.
Investigators revealed that missing Bangladeshi student Imon and the suspect had met during a bus journey. The suspect allegedly claimed he felt insulted by Imon’s behavior during that encounter.
However, police believe financial motives may also have played a role in the crime.
According to the investigation, Imon was lured to the Kofinou area with the promise of employment and was allegedly killed there before his body was secretly buried.
Authorities further stated that several hours after the murder, the suspect used Imon’s mobile phone to contact his father and demand ransom, allegedly attempting to stage a fake kidnapping for financial gain.
The body was recovered in a decomposed state, and preliminary findings suggest Imon was killed on the same night he went missing. Forensic experts are currently examining the scene, while police say the investigation remains ongoing to uncover all circumstances surrounding the case.
