A female student of Jahangirnagar University alleged that an unidentified man attempted to rape her after dragging her from a road on the university campus on Tuesday night.

The incident took place at about 11:00pm near the abandoned old Fazilatunnesa Hall area on the campus, according to students who accompanied the victim to the university’s security office.

They said that the victim, a student of the university’s 51st batch, was walking along a road when a man began following her.

When the man approached her near the old Fazilatunnesa Hall road, the student asked whether he belonged to the campus.

Shortly afterwards, he allegedly wrapped a cloth around the victim’s neck, dragged her into a dark area and attempted to rape her.

The student managed to escape and return to the road, where passersby rescued her and took her to the university’s medical centre for treatment.

A CCTV camera captured a man in the area around the time of the incident, but his identity had not been confirmed, the university authorities said.

The university medical centre duty doctor Tanvir Hossain said that that student had been given primary treatment.

Later, the student was taken to the university’s security office, where several female students, university proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam and leaders of the university’s student union were seen reviewing CCTV footage on early Wednesday.

Terming the incident as ‘very disgraceful’, Rashidul Alam said the university authorities were examining all CCTV footages across the campus to identify the suspect.

‘We have traced the accused in CCTV footage, but his identity could not yet be confirmed,’ he said.

‘The entire campus is under CCTV surveillance. We hope to obtain a clearer image from one of the recordings. The university administration stands beside the victim and legal action will be taken as quickly as possible,’ he added.
