Retired army member Hafizur Rahman, an accused in the murder case of Cumilla Victoria College student and cultural activist Sohagi Jahan Tonu, has been rearrested for failing to comply with a Supreme Court order asking him to surrender within 24 hours.

According to a police press release, a chamber judge of the Appellate Division on August 6 stayed the High Court order granting him bail and directed him to surrender within 24 hours.

The court also ordered the police to arrest him if he failed to surrender.

The Police Bureau of Investigation arrested Hafizur, former senior warrant officer of the army, raiding his residence in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on Saturday, to prevent him from fleeing, the press release said.

He was being sent to a court in Cumilla, it added.

Hafizur was arrested on April 22 and sent to jail custody in the Tonu murder case. He was released on August 4 after obtaining bail from the High Court.

The Appellate Division’s chamber judge stayed the High Court’s bail order on August 6 and directed Hafizur to surrender within 24 hours.

The stay order came after the government appealed in the Appellate Division seeking permission to appeal against his bail order.

As he did not comply with the order, police arrested him again, according to the press release.
