Assistant attorney general Md Mahfuzur Rahman resigned on Monday, just four days after his appointment, amid protests by a section of pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party lawyers alleging irregularities and corruption in the recruitment of law officers.

Mahfuzur submitted his resignation letter to law, justice and parliamentary affairs minister Md Asaduzzaman.

In his letter, he said the solicitor wing had appointed him, along with 179 others, as assistant attorney general through a notification issued on July 30.

He said that due to personal reasons he was unable to continue working in the post and requested that his resignation be accepted with effect from August 3.

Mahfuz was enrolled as High Court advocate in 20025, according to the Supreme Court Bar Association official.

His resignation came as a section of pro-BNP lawyers continued demonstrations for second day on Monday in front of the office of the attorney general demanding a review of the appointments.

They alleged that the recruitment process was marred by various irregularities and corruption, claiming that large sums of money had been exchanged to secure some of the appointments.

On July 30, the government cancelled all previous appointments of deputy attorneys general and assistant attorneys general and made fresh appointments.

Under the new appointments, 86 Supreme Court lawyers were appointed as deputy attorneys general and 179 lawyers as assistant attorneys general.

According to the notification, the appointments were made under Article 3(1) of the Bangladesh Law Officers Order, 1972 (President’s Order No 6 of 1972), after cancelling all previous appointments of deputy attorneys general and assistant attorneys general.
