Mosaddek Hossain’s career-best 86 off 70 in his comeback innings to international cricket was the headline as Bangladesh amassed 284-7 in the first ODI against Australia at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

Mosaddek remained unbeaten in his first innings in international cricket after four years, while smashing seven fours and three sixes.

After losing Saif Hasan early, who was undone by a beauty from Nathan Ellis, Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto laid a strong base for Bangladesh, after they were put into bat first.

Bangladesh put on 62 runs in the first powerplay, while Tanzid and Shanto both went on to score fifties. Shanto was dropped by Marnus Labuschagne on 9, before he reached his fifty in 57 balls.

Ellis broke the partnership of 96 off 90, when Tanzid was deceived by a slower delivery, after scoring 54 off 44. The left-hander earlier completed his fifty in 41 balls and struck seven fours and a six in his innings.

Australia pegged back Bangladesh when Matt Renshaw chipped in with two crucial wickets of Shanto and Litton Das.

Litton was caught and bowled before Shanto was caught at long off, after he made 67 off 86, with nine fours and a six.

In came Mosaddek, with his free flowing batting, put Australia under pressure again. After getting a reprieve 22 when Cooper Connolly dropped his catch off Renshaw, he reached his first international fifty in five years in 49 balls.

Australia was particularly sub-par with their fielding throughout the innings which helped Bangladesh’s cause.

Mosaddek’s partnership with Towhid Hridoy yielded 75 runs, before two quick wickets of Hridoy and Mehidy Hasan Miraz gave Australia another edge.

However, with help from Tanvir Islam and Taskin Ahmed, Mosaddek added another 65 runs for the seventh and eighth wicket, with 45 of those coming for the latter.

Ellis was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors as he took three for 38 in 10 overs. Renshaw chipped in with two for 35, while Liam Scott took two for 57 in his debut.
