A court in Dhaka on Sunday placed Abu Bakr Siddique on a seven-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act over a Facebook comment suggesting that a sniper would have been sufficient during a visit by the prime minister.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the order after Detective Branch sub inspector Md Yasin Paik, the investigating officer, sought seven days’ remand for interrogation.

According to the case statement, DB police detected the comment on October 21 in a Facebook page named ‘THE BEAUTY OF RAJSHAHI’.

The comment, posted under the account name ‘MD Abu Bokor Siddique’ on a photograph of a Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology bus used during the prime minister’s visit, read, ‘What a great opportunity this was, the only thing missing was a sniper.’

Police arrested Abu Bokor and his father, Md Ainal Haque, in a joint operation with Rajshahi Metropolitan Police in Paba upazila of Rajshahi on October 21.

Police seized a smartphone from Abu Bokor, who reportedly admitted to making the comment during initial questioning. His father was later released into his family’s custody after police found no evidence of his involvement.

The remand application said interrogation was necessary to identify other people allegedly involved in a conspiracy and to determine whether any organised group was behind the comment.

State counsel Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the remand order.
