State minister for cultural affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyum on Tuesday said that the July Memorial Museum would be officially inaugurated on Wednesday, marking July Mass Uprising Day 2026.

The Museum had been established to preserve the history of the long movement against authoritarian rule and the July Mass Uprising, and to pass it on to future generations, he said.

He said the museum would gradually be developed into a comprehensive memorial and research centre with necessary facilities and research resources.

He made the remarks at a press conference held at the Ministry of Cultural Affairs conference room at the Secretariat ahead of the inauguration of the July Memorial Museum.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Policy and Strategy, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs Dr Zahed Ur Rahman also addressed the press conference.

Cultural affairs minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury was also present at the event.

The state minister said that the decision of establishing the museum was taken on December 24, 2024.

The project formally began in January 2025 after the land was handed over to the authorities concerned.

He said that the additional time was required to complete different administrative processes, including drafting necessary laws and regulations, amending the relevant ordinance, publishing the gazette notification, and putting in place the legal framework for managing the museum.

After completing those procedures, August 5 was selected as the date for the inauguration, he added.
