Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the Awami League (AL), whose activities remain banned, may attempt to create unrest around its founding anniversary on 23 June.
He made the remarks on Monday while speaking to journalists at the Secretariat.
While responding to a question whether there is any risk of sabotage ahead of the AL’s founding anniversary, the home minister said that the law and order situation has not deteriorated. However, as a law enforcement authority, the government must remain vigilant at all times.
He added that some “malicious activities” by the AL have been observed. “We have seen that they have taken up activities such as processions and meetings in a few districts. Based on that, we felt they might attempt to create instability. Considering this, we have instructed all our forces to remain alert, as is always the case,” he said.
Salahuddin Ahmed further said that from today until 30 June, army personnel have been deployed under the Aid to the Civil Power Act in Dhaka Metropolitan, Chattogram Metropolitan, Narayanganj, Gazipur Metropolitan areas, and two additional districts to address any kind of subversive activities.
