The High Court on Monday overturned a 10-year jail sentence handed down to businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun by a lower court for possession of illegal arms.
The arms were reportedly seized from his residence during a raid in March 2007.
The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter delivered the verdict after allowing Mamun’s appeal to quash the lower court’s decision.
The court observed that the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Mamun, who faced over 19 cases involving charges of extortion, corruption, illegal arms possession, and tax evasion, was released from prison on bail following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, during a student-led mass uprising.
The Rapid Action Battalion arrested Mamun on March 26, 2007, and reportedly recovered a revolver from his residence during the operation.
Senior lawyer Sayeed Ahmed Raza with his junior Masum Billah defended Mamun while deputy general Sultana Akter Rubi represented the state.
