A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate court on Tuesday sent former Jatiya Sangsad speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury to jail in an attempted murder case filed with the Lalbagh police station over the 2024 July student-mass uprising.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Jewel Rana ordered the authorities to send Shirin to jail rejecting the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch’s two-day remand prayer in custody, according to court officials.

Earlier, a team of DMP DB arrested Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at her close relative house at Dhanmondi 8/A in Dhaka city at about 4:00am on Tuesday, said DMP Detective Branch chief and additional commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.

‘Shirin is accused in six cases related to 2024 July mass uprising. She went into hiding in different places after several cases were filed against her,’ said Shafikul.

Ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, amid a student-led mass uprising. Her cabinet members and lawmakers of the 12th parliament subsequently went into hiding, and the parliament was dissolved.

On September 2, 2024, Shirin Sharmin submitted her resignation letter to president Mohammed Shahabuddin as speaker of the 12th parliament. The Ministry of Law later issued a gazette notification in this regard.

On August 27, 2024, Shirin Sharmin and 16 others were made accused in a case filed over the killing of a goldsmith, Milon, in Rangpur during the student-led mass uprising on July 19.
