The inspector general of police Md Ali Hossain Fakir on Monday said that foreign ministry began its diplomatic efforts to extradite Faisal Karim Masud, the prime accused in Inquilab Mancha convener Sharif Osman Hadi murder case, and his associate Alamgir Hossain from India.
‘The two prime accused have been arrested in India and they will be brought back to Bangladesh soon,’ said IGP responding to a reporter at his maiden press conference held at the Police Headquarters in the capital.
Referring to the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence information, the ISPR said that it came to know that the Indian authorities had taken a hardline over the issue following the recent visit of a DGFI senior official to India.
Based on information from different sources, the ISPR said that Indian police arrested them between March 7 and March 8 conducting drives after receiving information from Bangladesh.
Asked about the home minister’s remarks about preparing lists to conduct drives against extortionists and crime suspects, the IGP said that they had already completed the lists and the drive would begin soon.
Speaking about the possibilities of labour unrest for wages and festivals allowances ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious festivals for the Muslims, he said that they had already held discussion meetings with the trade bodies like Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association to prevent any such unrest.
Asked about the move to bring back ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India, he said that police were working with the foreign ministry following diplomatic channels.
He said that they strengthen security on highways and law enforcers would remain high alert to ensure security of Eid home goers.
‘We will not tolerate robberies and hijacking during Eid travel,’ he added.
