The decomposed bodies of a man, his wife and their two children were recovered from their house in Machuapara area in Rangpur city on Saturday night.

The deceased were identified as Ganapati Chakrabarty, 60, son of Hemanta Chakrabarty, his wife Priti Lata Chakrabarty, 50, their daughter Agami Chakrabarty, 25, and their son Ayush Chakrabarty Priyam, 12.

Agami completed Master of Arts in English from Carmichael College, and Priyam was a Class V student of Rangpur Zilla School.

Ganapati Chakrabarty was a senior teacher of Rangpur Zilla School and went on retirement in the last December.  After his retirement he started running a homeopathic chamber at Rangpur Cooperative Market.

According to local people and relatives, the house was found locked from the outside since Thursday. Local people became suspicious after hearing no response or sound from the house.

Ganapati’s niece Saptami Chakrabarty, who lives in Badarganj upazila, said that the house had been found locked from the last Thursday.

‘We could not contact with any of them as their phone remained switched off.  We heard the news at about 9:30pm on Saturday,’ she said.

Priti Lata Chakrabarty’s younger sister Puja Chakrabarty said that she had talked to her sister over phone on Thursday for the last time.

‘I tried to contact with them this (Saturday) evening, but all of their mobile phones were switched off,’ she said.

The main entrance of the house was locked from inside and there was no electricity in the house.

The relatives and local people, later, entered the house breaking open the door and found the bodies of the victims and informed the police

Police initially suspected that this was ‘planned killings for robbery.’

Officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotowali Police Station AKM Nazmul Quader said that investigation teams from several agencies were working at the scene.

‘We are trying to find out what exactly happened here and identify the reason behind the killings,’ he said.

Rangpur Criminal Investigation Department in-charge Sumit Chowdhury said that the bodies were found in a decomposed condition.

‘The incident may have occurred three to four days ago. Lockers and furniture of the house have been found damaged and broken,’ he added.
