The death of veteran playwright and “Monchosharothi” Ataur Rahman, regarded as a legend of the country’s stage drama, has cast a deep shadow of sorrow over the nation’s cultural arena. Numerous artists and cultural figures from the theater community gathered to pay their final respects to him.
Playwright Nasiruddin Yousuff delivered an emotional tribute while remembering the late Ataur Rahman. Speaking to reporters after paying homage to his body at the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital on Tuesday, he said, “He was my elder, and our relationship spanned more than 55 years. Ataur Rahman also actively participated in the Liberation War. Despite our political differences, we all worked together in theater. Ataur Rahman may have died physically, but I believe his spirit will live on forever.”
Renowned actress Lucky Enam said, “Our Ataur Rahman, Ata Bhai, is no longer with us today. I first met him in 1972 while working in theater. He taught me how to perform on stage. He was my first mentor. Everyone must leave this world one day, but the loss of those who have contributed so much to society, the country, and its culture is truly irreplaceable. Ataur Rahman was such a person.”
Actor Zahid Hasan said, “Ataur Rahman was an exceptionally wise, talented, and scholarly person. At the same time, he was as simple and lively as a child. Though he possessed great wisdom, he carried the innocence of a young child. The void left by his passing can never be filled.”
