The government has appointed Habiganj Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader and Supreme Court lawyer Md Aminul Islam as the chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, cancelling the appointment of his predecessor Muhammad Tajul Islam.

Aminul Islam, a member of former prime minister Khaleda Zia’s legal team and BNP’s Habiganj district convener, is also a senior leader of Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum.

He previously served as a special public prosecutor at the Speedy Trial Tribunal in Dhaka during the BNP government from 2001 to 2006.

A government notification said that the chief prosecutor’s position is equivalent to that of the attorney general. Solicitor Md Monzurul Hossain issued the notification in this regard.

The cancellation of Tajul’s appointment came six days after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party assumed power and Tarique Rahman took oath as prime minister following the BNP’s landslide victory in the February 12 elections.

On September 7, 2024, Mohammad Tajul Islam — known for defending Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in war crimes cases during the Awami League government— was appointed chief prosecutor of the reconstituted ICT after Professor Muhammad Yunus assumed state power following the August 5, 2024 student-led mass uprising.
