Hasan Mahmnud took 4-42, but Bangladesh struggled for the most part of the innings before losing two quick wickets on the second day of the warm-up game against Cricket Australia XI at the Marrara Oval in Darwin on Friday.

The visitors were 19-2 and trailing by 73 runs in the second innings at stumps in reply to CA XI’s 355 in the first innings, thanks to a hundred from Teague Wyllie and fifties from skipper Kurtis Patterson and wicketkeeper-batter Jake Doran.

Shadman Islam was top-edged while attempting a pull shot off Campbell Thompson in the third over before Mominul Haque was bowled by the same bowler’s next over.

The CA XI were 139-5 at one stage, having resumed the day on 51-2, in reply to Bangladesh’s 263 in the first innings. However, a 167-run partnership between Wyllie and Doran put Bangladesh under pressure.

Hasan, who had Sam Konstas the first evening, removed Josh Phillipe early in the second morning to encourage Bangladesh. Phillipe was bowled after misjudging a length ball, which he left alone.

Patterson then added 73 runs for the fourth wicket with Clayton before Ebadot Hossain gave Bangladesh a breakthrough by removing the latter, who made a quickfire 48 from 58.

Hasan picked up his third when Patterson was clean bowled for 53 to leave the hosts at 139-5.

That scenario changed when Wyllie and Doran started to counter-attack. Wyllie, the former Under-19 batter who top-scored for Australia in 2022, made 130 from 117 deliveries while striking 16 fours. Doran, on the other hand, scored 76 from 102 balls, with 10 fours.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh’s first-innings’ centurion with the bat, broke their partnership by enticing a top-edge from Doran.

The CA XI didn’t last long after that as they lost their last five wickets for 49 runs. Miraz picked up Jerrssis Wadia’s wicket before Hanno Jacobs was bowled by Taskin Ahmed.

Hasan picked up his fourth by having Corey Rocchiccioli, CA XI’s first innings, here with the ball before Khaled Ahmed finally removed Teague Wyllie.

Bangladesh also had injury concerns as Taijul Islam suffered a bone contusion to one of his bowling fingers while batting on Thursday and didn’t take part in bowling.

Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said that they had kept the finger bandaged, and Taijul had been given complete rest on the second day.

‘We will reassess his condition tomorrow,’ said Bayjedul.

In place of Taijul, the BCB sought permission from the opposition team management and the match officials to allow uncapped pacer Mushfik Hasan to bowl.

The uncapped pacer, however, had an unforgettable day as he conceded 38 runs without any success from four overs.
