Local residents staged a procession and rally in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira on Wednesday, demanding the resignation and expulsion of Satkhira-4 Jamaat MP Gazi Nazrul Islam over a video of him with a young woman that went viral on social media.

The protest was organised under the banner of ‘Conscious Citizens of Shyamnagar’. The procession, held around noon, paraded the main roads of the upazila before ending at the Press Club premises, where protesters also burned an effigy of the MP.

Former upazila BNP Convener Solaiman Kabir, former Vice-President Prof Abu Sayeed, educationist Advocate Ashek Elahi Munna, Gabura Union Parishad Chairman Masudul Alam, Padmapukur Union Parishad Chairman Amzadul Islam and National Women’s Organisation Shyamnagar upazila unit President Nurjahan Parvin Jharna, among others, spoke at the rally.

The speakers demanded that Gazi Nazrul be expelled from Jamaat and removed from Parliament over what they described as “moral degradation”.

“Gazi Nazrul Islam has brought disgrace to the people of Shyamnagar. We no longer want to see him as our MP. From today, he has been declared unwelcome in Shyamnagar,” they said.

They also urged Jamaat-e-Islami to take organisational action against the MP over the incident.

The video surfaced on social media on Monday night. It showed Gazi Nazrul in what appeared to be an intimate moment with a young woman in a room in the capital’s Moghbazar area.

On Tuesday afternoon, Gazi Nazrul explained his position in a Facebook post, saying the woman in the video was his second wife, Mariam Begum.

He also claimed that they had got married in a family ceremony on 17 June this year. However, his claim about the marriage has also sparked controversy.
