Opposition chief whip and convener of the National Citizen Party Nahid Islam on Thursday said that many of the aspirations of Bangladesh’s independence remained unfulfilled, forcing the new generation to make fresh sacrifices.
Nahid Islam made the remarks after paying tribute to the 1971 war of independence martyrs at the National Memorial on Independence Day.
‘Many of the aspirations of our independence have not been realised. Because they remain unfulfilled, our new generation has had to give blood and even their lives again. We want to ensure this does not happen in the future,’ he told reporters.
Nahid said the day was an occasion to honour those who supported the independence war, including martyrs and women who suffered during the 1971 war.
‘On this day, we remember with respect those who stood for independence and made sacrifices. Based on the aspirations of 1971 and those of the recent mass uprising, we want to build a Bangladesh founded on equality and human dignity’, he said.
He added that the party was working toward establishing a society free of inequality and grounded in humanitarian values.
