Amid a fresh resurgence of COVID-19 in Bangladesh, Chattogram has recorded two Zika cases after nine years.
According to sources, a 42-year-old man and a woman tested positive for the mosquito-borne virus at a private diagnostic centre in the city on Sunday.
Chattogram district Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam Chowdhury confirmed the development and said detailed information on the patients has been collected.
“The male patient experienced symptoms like fever, body aches, and reddish skin, while the female patient complained of fever, swollen limbs, and joint pain,” he said.
“The both underwent diagnosis at Epic Healthcare Lab,” said the civil surgeon.
“We will begin the necessary treatment for the patients from today (Tuesday),” he added.
According to the “Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR)”, around 80% of Zika cases are asymptomatic. The remaining cases may present symptoms such as skin rashes, headaches, red eyes, and joint or muscle pains – usually appearing within 3 to 12 days of infection and lasting for up to a week.
Earlier on 22 March in 2016, then-state minister of health, Zahid Maleque, announced that a 67-year-old man had been diagnosed with Zika virus in Chattogram.
