Rail services between Dhaka and most northern routes were disrupted on Wednesday afternoon after nine compartments of the Nilsagar Express derailed in the Santahar area of Bogura district.
No casualties were reported immediately following the incident.
Bangladesh Railway’s Dhaka divisional manager, Kamruzzaman, said that trains on major northern routes—including Parbatipur, Rangpur, Chilahati, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, and Lalmonirhat—have been halted.
Farid Ahmed, general manager (West Zone) of Bangladesh Railway, told New Age that the derailment occurred on the Dhaka-Chilahati route between Santahar and Akkelpur stations around 2:00 pm.
‘Before the accident, some maintenance work was ongoing on the track, which could be a possible reason for the derailment,’ he said, adding, ‘A probe will be conducted to determine the exact cause.’
He said a relief train has been called from Ishwardi to remove the derailed compartments but did not specify when rail services would be restored.
