Police recovered a time bomb and two litres of petrol from the premises of the shrine of Baul saint Fakir Lalon Shah in Cheuria of Kumarkhali upazila in Kushtia on Monday.

According to police and local people, a suspicious object wrapped in a white bag was spotted on the shrine premises at about 2:00am on Monday. Police took precautionary measures and moved the sadhus and fakirs, who were on the shrine premises, to a safe place.

A bomb disposal team arrived from Dhaka on Monday morning and recovered the time bomb and petrol from the bag. The bomb was later defused.

Kumarkhali police station officer-in-charge Jamal Uddin said, ‘A time bomb and petrol in two bottles were recovered from the premises of Lalon Shah’s shrine. The bomb has been defused. The situation in the shrine area is currently normal. Police are investigating the incident.’

He said security had been tightened at the shrine and in surrounding areas following the recovery. Entry to the premises had been restricted since Sunday night, limiting access for sadhus, devotees and visitors.

Additional police were deployed in and around the shrine to prevent any untoward incident, he added.
