Taijul Islam’s six-for led Bangladesh to a memorable 78-run victory over Pakistan in the second and final Test and claimed the series 2-0 at the Sylhet International Stadium on Wednesday.

Chasing a world-record 437 runs for win, Pakistan needed 121 runs more on the fifth and final day with three wickets in hand. But the visitors were bowled out for 358 with Mohammad Rizwan playing a valiant 94.

This was Bangladesh’s second consecutive 2-0 series win over Pakistan, as they became only the second team after Australia to hand them two consecutive clean sweeps.

The first 50 minutes of the day were quite frustrating for Bangladesh as Rizwan and Sajid were counter-attacking with luck in their favour.

After a delayed start of 15 minutes, Shanto opened with Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana. The latter drew an edge from Rizwan, but Mehidy Hasan Miraz couldn’t hold onto it at gully.

Sajid Khan struck two back-to-back boundaries off Taskin before Rizwan hit Nahid one, as their partnership went past 50 runs in quick time.

Sajid top-edged on 26, after Nahid went from around the wicket, but it fell in no man’s land as Bangladesh’s frustration grew.

However, just after a break, Taijul broke through for Bangladesh. It was a classic left-arm spinner’s delivery, which spun after landing around the off-stump line and took the edge to Shanto at first slip. This was Taijul’s 18th five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

That opened the floodgate, as Shoriful grabbed his first of the match and the most prized wicket of the innings when he had Rizwan. The Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter was caught at gully by Miraz, where he had survived earlier, after making 94 off 166.

Khurram Shahzad was then caught at wide long-on when he tried to slog sweep Taijul, handing Bangladesh a memorable win. Pakistan lost their last three wickets for no runs.

Taijul finished with a figure of 6-120, while Nahid Rana took two for 71. Shoriful and Mehidy each grabbed one.
