BNP Chairperson Tarique Rahman has said the state has a responsibility towards those who have been martyred and can never forget them.
He made the remarks on Saturday (January 17) at an exchange meeting with families of victims of enforced disappearance, killings and torture at the China-Bangladesh Friendship International Conference Center in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
At the event organised by “Amra BNP Poribar” and “Mayer Daak”, Tarique Rahman became tearful as he listened to the statements and appeals of the families of victims.
Addressing them, he said: “In front of me sit thousands of beloved faces who endured persecution during the fascist era. We will do everything in our power to ensure that your sacrifices and your deep sorrows are not in vain.”
He added: “Those who were disappeared and martyred in the anti-fascist movement carried within them a yearning for a democratic state. A democratic state and government have many responsibilities. The state can never forget you.”
Tarique Rahman said that the BNP has devised several plans to ensure that the sacrifices of all martyrs remain etched in public memory, but these could not be implemented at the moment due to restrictions imposed by the Election Commission.
He announced that, if the BNP assumes state power in the future, key national installations would be named after the martyrs so that their sacrifices are remembered by generations to come.
