BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said the country’s political situation is becoming increasingly complex, as what he described as “fascist forces” are regrouping to return to power.

“The situation is getting more complicated every day. Fascist forces are uniting once again and conspiring to regain power. We urge the interim government to arrange an election without delay,” he said at a discussion titled “Gano-Abhuthan-er Protyasha o Desher Ganatantrik Uttoroner Poth” at the Jatiya Press Club.

Fakhrul said BNP was the first to propose political reforms, and therefore the government should not waste time. “Engage in dialogue with political parties, identify the problems, and hold elections immediately,” he said.

He warned that the country may fall behind for years if the current opportunity for political transition is missed. “Every time, our youth sacrifice their lives in movements. This time, we must not let the opportunity slip away,” he said.

Fakhrul further said that political parties have shown their love for the country by making sacrifices to free it from authoritarianism. He called for a consensus among all parties to ensure that power is not handed over to “fascist forces” again.

He further said BNP does not seek to come to power through a revolution. “We want to establish a democratic system with public support. No barrier can stop this. The spirit of 1971 and our independence are non-negotiable. We must move towards democracy,” he said.
