Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping have signed more than 20 agreements during Putin’s official visit to China, further strengthening bilateral ties between the two neighbouring powers.

The two leaders recently signed a joint statement pledging to enhance strategic coordination and deepen “good-neighbourly and friendly cooperation” between Russia and China.

According to an aide to Putin, Moscow and Beijing have also reached a broad understanding regarding the long-discussed “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline project.

Once implemented, the pipeline will be capable of supplying up to 50 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually from Russia to China, significantly expanding energy cooperation between the two countries.

The proposed project is expected to strengthen China’s long-term energy security while providing Russia with a major alternative export route amid shifting global energy markets and Western sanctions pressure.
