Robot crashes into judges’ table after trying to lift tiny weight at Beijing games

A weightlifting humanoid robot lost its balance and crashed into the judges’ table during the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, in a dramatic mishap captured on video.

The incident occurred on Monday during the weightlifting final of the second edition of the games, according to media reports.

The robot, which toppled while attempting the lift, was later carried away on a stretcher. The weightlifting event is designed to test humanoid robots’ balance, joint torque and stability while handling heavy loads.

The second World Humanoid Robot Games feature 51 competitions involving more than 2,000 robots from 16 countries.

Despite the crash, a robot representing the Beijing Humanoid-HUST team won the event’s first gold medal after successfully lifting a 16-kilogramme (35-pound) barbell overhead.
