The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) on Tuesday said motorcycle rideshare operators would be allowed to purchase up to five litres of octane or petrol daily within city corporation areas under certain conditions.
Fuel filling stations have been instructed to implement the government decision by verifying the eligibility of rideshare operators before selling the fuel.
Rideshare users have also been asked to preserve their purchase receipts and present them during subsequent purchases if required.
Since Friday, both rideshare and general motorcyclists have been permitted to buy up to two litres of petrol or octane per day under a fuel rationing policy aimed at preventing panic buying, hoarding and smuggling.
The measure comes amid speculation that escalating tensions in the Gulf region—following joint strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation—could disrupt global oil supplies and cause shortages in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh relies heavily on fuel imports from the Gulf region, both directly and indirectly.
