The Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has strongly condemned the Prothom Alo report titled “Questions emerge over Tajul Islam’s involvement in ATM Azharul’s case”. It described such actions as a malicious attempt to undermine the ongoing genocide trials in July.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Chief Prosecutor’s Office said that the report published on Thursday was termed “opinion-based and driven by ill-intent.”

The statement claimed that the report had tarnished the reputation of the Chief Prosecutor’s Office of the International Crimes Tribunal.

The press release clarified that Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam had served as the defense lawyer for Jamaat-e-Islami leader ATM Azharul Islam since 2010. However, after assuming the role of Chief Prosecutor of the ICT, he did not participate in the case. He had already informed the full bench of the Supreme Court that he would not be involved in the case, ensuring that there was no conflict of interest and that he did not violate professional ethics or conduct.

The statement further asserted that the Prothom Alo report was part of a coordinated effort to discredit the ongoing war crimes trials at the ICT.

Additionally, the press release alleged that a vested group associated with the Awami League and a fallen autocratic regime was working together to discredit the ICT’s judicial process. The Chief Prosecutor’s Office demanded an immediate retraction of the report and an apology from the concerned journalist.
