Terming the proposed budget as unilateral, BNP has said that the national budget for FY 2025–26 does not reflect the opinions of the people and the political parties.

Amir Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury, standing committee member of the party, said this while addressing a press conference at its Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Wednesday.

“We had expected the interim government to announce the national budget based on a consensus among anti-fascist political parties. The government could have sought input from people of different walks of life. Experts, civil society members, business leaders and youth representatives could have also been included in the process, but it was not done,” he said.

Claiming that the proposed budget is non-participatory and traditional, he said the inflation stands at double-digit, while the government fixed its target in the budget to bring it down to 6.5 percent, which is unrealistic indeed.

Citing a report of the World Bank, he said over 27 lakh people fell below the poverty line afresh in Bangladesh during the tenure of the current government.

The government could have halted the trend if it had designed the national budget in a planned way, said the BNP leader.

He said the GDP growth in the FY 2024-25 was 3.97 percent, however, the interim government set the target in the proposed budget at 5.6 percent, which is impractical.

The country’s food security is under threat while the government proposed inadequate allocation in the social safety net programme, Khashru said.
