Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has informed the Parliament that in the past 42 days of the current government’s tenure, there has not been a single incident of crossfire or enforced disappearance in the country.

He said the government is committed to protecting human rights and will not allow extrajudicial killings like in the past.

He shared this information on Thursday (9 April) in Parliament after presenting the “National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill-2026,” in response to objections from opposition MP Hasnat Abdullah. The session was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram.

The Law Minister said, “This government is about 42 days old. It could have engaged in politics of revenge if it wanted. But in these 42 days, not a single person in Bangladesh has been a victim of crossfire, nor has anyone been disappeared. The human rights record itself shows the path we are following.”

He further said, “In Bangladesh’s history, the family that has suffered the most human rights violations is the Zia family and the BNP family. Many of those sitting before us have themselves been victims of human rights violations over the past 17 years. We do not want any mother or sister in Bangladesh to sit on a prayer mat, shedding tears while waiting for their loved ones.”

Explaining the Human Rights Commission bill, the minister said the 2025 ordinance was drafted hastily and contains several legal inconsistencies. In particular, Section 16 lacks clear guidelines regarding compensation or penalties. Therefore, the ordinance is being reviewed through consultations with stakeholders to formulate a transparent and robust law. In the meantime, the 2009 law has been temporarily reinstated to avoid any legal vacuum in the Human Rights Commission.
