Masum Mostofa, the member of parliament from Netrokona-5 (Purbadhala), was attacked, his car vandalised, and he was briefly held hostage on Friday evening.
The incident occurred around 6:00pm at Giripath Filling Station in the Atkapara area on the Shyamganj–Birishiri road. Police later rescued the MP at approximately 7:30pm.
According to local sources, the filling station had stopped supplying fuel after 5:00pm. Around 6:00pm, the MP arrived in a private car and spoke with the pump owner. He then went to a room to offer prayers. Shortly afterward, around 20 to 25 young men arrived on about 15 motorcycles, demanded fuel, and created a disturbance.
At one point, they vandalised the MP’s vehicle. When Masum Mostofa came out after prayers, the group chased and surrounded him.
Several police members were present at the scene but were unable to control the situation. Additional police from Purbadhala Police Station arrived about half an hour later and rescued the MP. He was then taken away in a vehicle sent by the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO).
An eyewitness, speaking on condition of anonymity, claimed that around 35 activists from the BNP and its affiliated organisations were involved in the attack and also assaulted people accompanying the MP.
Netrokona Police Superintendent Tariqul Islam confirmed that the MP was rescued and efforts are underway to arrest those involved.
Speaking over the phone, Masum Mostofa alleged that BNP activists carried out the attack, vandalised his car, and physically assaulted him and his supporters. He said he plans to take legal action.
However, Abu Taher Talukdar, a BNP leader and former rival candidate in the constituency, said he had heard about the incident but denied any involvement of his party members.
In a joint statement, district Jamaat leaders condemned the incident, alleging that over a hundred people carried out a planned attack, vandalised the vehicle, and surrounded the mosque where the MP was praying. They demanded swift arrest and exemplary punishment for those responsible.
