The High Court on Tuesday dismissed a writ petition filed by National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, challenging the validity of BNP-nominated Dr MA Quayum’s candidacy in the Dhaka-11 constituency for the 13th National Parliamentary Election.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hasan passed the order.
On the day, senior lawyer Mohammad Hossain and advocate Zahirul Islam Musa represented Nahid Islam, also the rival candidate from the same constituency and the candidate of the 11-party alliance.
Attorney General-in-Charge Arshadur Rauf appeared on behalf of the state, while senior lawyer Ahsanul Karim and Ruhul Quddus Kajal appeared for Quayum.
After the order, Ruhul Quddus Kajal told the media that Nahid Islam had filed the writ seeking cancellation of Quayum’s candidacy on false allegations with the intention of undermining a rival BNP candidate.
Earlier on 2 February, a writ petition was filed with the relevant branch of the High Court alleging dual citizenship and concealment of information against BNP-nominated MA Quayum in the Dhaka-11 constituency.
