The websites of Janata Bank and Bengal Commercial Bank remained inaccessible on Sunday amid fears of cyberattacks on banks and other financial institutions.

The website shutdowns prevent customers from accessing information and services through the banks’ websites.

Both banks have posted notices on their websites saying that maintenance work is underway and that the websites would be restored soon. The banks also apologised to customers for the inconvenience.

Fears of cyberattacks on banks and other financial institutions have persisted for several days.

Against this backdrop, Bangladesh Bank’s official website was taken offline last Thursday and reopened at 8:00am on Sunday, three days later.

The websites of Agrani Bank, IFIC Bank, Standard Islami Bank and SBAC Bank were also taken offline during the period but have since become accessible.

Internet banking and mobile banking transactions, however, continued as usual over the past three days, causing no disruption to customers’ financial transactions.

The websites of a number of banks rely on the PHP programming language. Two serious security vulnerabilities recently discovered in PHP have raised cybersecurity concerns worldwide.
