India reviews Hasina extradition request

India is examining Bangladesh’s request to extradite former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after being ousted from power during the July mass uprising.

The statement was made on Friday in New Delhi during the weekly media briefing by Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs, in response to questions from journalists. The information was also shared through a video posted on his X account.

During the briefing, a journalist referred to  remarks by Bangladesh’s foreign minister following his recent visit to New Delhi, where he met his Indian counterpart and raised the issue of seeking Sheikh Hasina’s extradition.

In response, Jaiswal said, ‘The request for Sheikh Hasina’s extradition is being examined as part of an ongoing judicial and internal legal process. We will continue to engage constructively with all stakeholders on this issue.’

On the matter of banning the Awami League, he said, ‘We are closely monitoring all developments,’ but did not elaborate further.

Jaiswal emphasised India’s interest in strengthening bilateral relations with Bangladesh’s new government.

He noted that during the foreign minister’s visit, India reiterated its willingness to engage constructively and deepen ties.
