The High Court on Tuesday summarily rejected a writ petition filed by National Citizen Party candidate Nahid Islam challenging the Election Commission’s decision to validate the candidacy of BNP nominee MA Quiyyum in the Dhaka-11 constituency.

A bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan passed the order after hearing the petition, which was filed on Monday.

Nahid’s lawyer Mohammad Hossain argued that Quiyyum holds citizenship of the Bhanuati state and failed to disclose this information in the documents submitted to the Election Commission.

He said the information was disclosed later.

The lawyer argued that dual citizenship disqualifies a person from contesting parliamentary elections under the Constitution and relevant election laws.

The court, however, rejected the petition at the preliminary hearing stage.
