A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, early on Thursday.

He was detained at his residence in Mirpur DOHS in the capital and taken to the DB office for questioning.

DMP Detective Branch chief Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said he was brought to the DB office on Mintoo Road at around 3:30am. However, he did not provide further details regarding the detention.

Lieutenant General Mamun Khaled served as a director at DGFI from December 2007 during the tenure of the military-backed interim government and continued in the position until December 2010.

He was made DGFI chief in June 2011 during the Awami League government’s tenure and served in the post until March 2013. He retired from the Bangladesh Army in 2020.

Earlier, in May last year, a court imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Mamun Khaled and his wife, Nigar Sultana, following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). At the time, the ACC said it was investigating allegations of financial irregularities and illicit assets against them.

On Monday night, detectives also arrested another key figure linked to the military-backed interim government of 2007–08, Lieutenant General (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury.

He is currently on police remand in connection with a human trafficking case.
