Crowds flock to Shaheed Minar to honor language martyrs

A large number of people gathered at the Central Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to the Language Martyrs.

Representatives of various political parties, organisations, and educational institutions arrived at the Shaheed Minar on Saturday (21 February) morning to offer their respects.

At the first hour of the day, at 12:01am, President Mohammad Shahabuddin paid tribute by placing a wreath. At 12:08am, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman followed with a floral tribute. Members of the cabinet were present with him.

After the Prime Minister’s tribute, wreaths were placed on behalf of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the Zia family.

Subsequently, leaders of the 11-party alliance led by opposition leader and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Shafiqur Rahman paid their respects. Opposition Chief Whip and Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) Nahid Islam along with other alliance MPs, were present.

Later, Cabinet Secretary Dr. Nasimul Ghani, Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, and other judges of the Appellate Division offered tributes. On behalf of the armed forces, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan, and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan paid homage.

On behalf of University of Dhaka, Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan placed a wreath.

Among the political parties and organizations that paid tribute were the National Citizen Party (NCP), Gono Odhikar Parishad, NDM, AB Party, Jatiya Party, BJP, JP, CPB, BASAD, Revolutionary Workers Party, JASAD, JSD, and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

In addition, leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, along with Chhatra Union, Chhatra Front, and Chhatra Maitri, were also present.
