Court orders ex-Jubo League leader Samrat to appear by Sunday

A Dhaka court on Thursday ordered expelled Jubo League leader Ismail Chowdhury Samrat, who is currently on bail, to appear before the court by Sunday in a Tk195 crore money laundering case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Saifuzzaman passed the order, state prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed.

On this day, lawyer Afroza Shahnaz Parvin submitted the appearance under Section 205 of the CrPC on behalf of Samrat, which was opposed by the state prosecutor.

The court, after a hearing, ordered that the hearing would continue next Sunday in Samrat’s presence.

According to the case documents, Samrat allegedly laundered Tk195 crore through his associate Enamul Haque Arman.

From 27 December 2011 to 9 August 2019, Samrat travelled 35 times to Singapore, thrice to Malaysia, twice to Dubai, and twice to Hong Kong, while Arman travelled to Singapore 23 times between 12 December 2011 and 18 May 2019.

CID filed the case under the Money Laundering Prevention Act with Ramna Model Police Station on 13 September 2020.
