The government on Saturday appointed five leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party as administrators at five more city corporations in the country.
The five city corporations are Barishal, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Rangpur, and Cumilla city corporations, according to a gazette notification issued by the Local Government Division on Saturday.
The administrators will serve until the city corporations are reconstituted or until further orders are issued, said the gazette notification.
Bilqis Akter Jahan Shirin was appointed administrator of the Barishal City Corporation. She currently serves as the organisational secretary of the BNP’s Barishal division.
In Rajshahi, Mahfuzur Rahman, general secretary of the BNP’s city unit, has been given the responsibility as administrator in Rajshahi City Corporation.
Rukunuzzaman Rokon, member secretary of the BNP’s Mymensingh South district unit, was appointed administrator of the Memensingh City Corporation.
In Rangpur, Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury, member secretary of the BNP’s city unit, was appointed administrator of the Rangpur City Corporation.
Yusuf Molla, general secretary of the BNP’s Cumilla city unit, was appointed administrator of the Cumilla City Corporation.
The five newly appointed administrators met prime minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday afternoon at the prime minister’s office at the Sangsad Bhaban.
Earlier, on February 23, the government appointed BNP leaders as administrators of six city corporations, including Dhaka.
Among them, Abdus Salam, a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, was appointed administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation. Shafiqul Islam Khan, the BNP’s defeated candidate for the Dhaka-15 constituency, was given the responsibility of Dhaka North City Corporation.
In Khulna, BNP organisational secretary Nazrul Islam Manju was appointed administrator of the city corporation, while Abdul Qayyum Chowdhury, president of the BNP’s Sylhet district unit, was given the responsibility of Sylhet City Corporation.
In Narayanganj, BNP city convener Md Sakhawat Hossain Khan was appointed administrator, and in Gazipur, BNP city unit president Shawkat Hossain Sarkar was given the role.
After the interim government assumed office on August 8, 2024, the mayors of 12 city corporations across the country were removed on August 19, 2024 and administrators were appointed in their place.
Following the 13th National Parliament Election, discussions have now begun regarding local government elections at the city corporations.
