The Border Guard Bangladesh on Friday night thwarted an alleged attempt by India’s Border Security Force to push 20 people into Bangladesh through the Chouka border under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj.

The group, comprising 11 women, five men and four children, is currently staying on the Indian side of the no-man’s-land after BGB personnel prevented their entry into Bangladesh.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-59, confirmed the incident on Saturday morning.

According to BGB officials, BSF members attempted to push the 20 people into Bangladesh through the Chouka border under Shibganj upazila late on Friday.

BGB patrol members detected the move and immediately took up positions along the frontier, preventing the group from entering Bangladeshi territory.

Following the resistance by the BGB, the individuals remained stranded near the zero line on the Indian side of the border.

‘Due to the vigilance and prompt action of the BGB patrol team, we were able to foil the push-in attempt involving 20 people,’ Lieutenant Colonel Tajul Islam said.

‘They are currently staying near the zero line. We are heading to the border area and will be able to provide further details later,’ he added.

The latest incident comes amid a series of reported push-in attempts along different border points in the Rajshahi region in recent weeks, which the BGB has either resisted or challenged through flag meetings with the BSF.
