A leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of the ruling Awami League, was sent to jail on Tuesday for setting a sugar-laden truck on fire on the Dhaka-Chattagram highway on November 2 during the nationwide blockade called by the major opposition parties including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Nurul Uddin Tipu, vice-president of BCL Dhania Union in Feni Sadar Upazila, was arrested on Monday night and sent to jail through court on Tuesday morning, said Feni Model Police Station inspector Mahfuzur Rahman.
During the blockade on the night of November 2, a group of about 20 unidentified individuals obstructed vehicle movement by felling trees on the highway, said Feni Town Police Outpost sub-inspector Md Hayat Ullah.
At one stage, they vandalized vehicles, threw bricks, and set a truck of Bhai Bhai Transport Agency on fire, he added.
Later, the Bhai Bhai Transport Agency owner Uzzal Baiddya filed a case with the Feni Model Police Station.
Nurul Abchar Apon, the Feni Sadar Upazila BCL president and district council member, said that the allegation against Tipu has been investigated.
If Tipu is found guilty, organisational action will be taken, he added.
Meanwhile, Md Rubel, the president of the BNP’s student wing Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal in Birinchi Ward of Feni municipality, was arrested on November 4 and subsequently sent to jail in connection with the case.
